Evaporative Coolers Problems – What You Can Fix And When To Call A Pro

Evaporative air cooler is very easy to use, no doubt. They can be very easy to maintain too. However, people want to know if they are doing too much or too little. You are also interested in knowing what you can fix and what may need the calling-on of a professional; that’s why you are here.

What you can fix:

Fixing begins with cleaning. Make sure to wipe down the exterior of your air cooler. Let it be clean. If there are watermarks on it, perhaps when trying to fill it up, you should clean them, to prevent bacteria from breeding. Clean the parts your hands can reach very conveniently. Clean before use in summer and always clean before storing it up in winter.

Clean up the gills or evaporative media. You can do that by vacuuming the media. They are supposed to be filters, and sometimes they trap dirt from the water. The more accumulated the dirt is, the more clogged the unit is, and that can cause ineffectiveness in the cooler’s operation. So, you can clean the fan and the evaporative pads or media.

Wash water tank: If you notice the water is not clean and have issues, you can go ahead by yourself to get it cleaned up with a little soapy water. Rinse with clean water, and you are good to go again.

If you have the means, you can get out the cooling pads and replace them if need be. Do that with the recommended replacement option.

When to Call a Pro

First things first; if you are not a certified HVAC system or air cooler installer, do not do it yourself. Let a professional company or agency do it. That way, if anything goes wrong, they can bear the implication. If you have a warranty on the product, then you can return it to the place you bought the product after you have tried all the troubleshooting options. They know what to do about it. However, if you do not have a warranty, you should call on a professional repair person after you’ve carried out all troubleshooting options. You want to call on a professional if you perceive an electrical fault with the unit, which is beyond what you can try. To avoid the risk of electrocution, it is best to not tamper with the electrical component of your evaporative air cooler. That would include issues like noticing a smoking component from within the unit.

Also, for mechanical faults, let a professional handle them. If the fan is not working or blowing, but other things such as the water pump are working, you want to call over a professional.
