What is the True Cost of Fashion? I am still digesting the impact of the film ' the True Cost' by @andrew_morgan screened at @artisansandadventurers yesterday, presented by @laurenmccrostie ---
This is a picture of Shima Akhter and her daughter Nadia. She is a Garment worker in Bangladesh, possessing more strength, dignity and courage than me & most I know. Shima shares her story, trying to get better working conditions for her colleagues, as well as provide her daughter with the life tools necessary so she does not need to do as her mother has done.
This film eloquently examines the legacy of the Rana Plaza disaster, where over 1000 mostly Female workers were killed, and how the global garment industry is fed by OUR (yes 'tis is all of us) constant + insatiable demand for inexpensive ever changing fashion.
I urge you to watch the film and I challenge you to take the following actions:
1. post a selfie in support of #fashionrevolutionweekwearing an treasured item of clothing inside out and asking the brand in question #whomademyclothes(or jewellery, shoes etc) .. more at @fash_rev
2. Examine your part in the consumption of Fashion Items and what you can do to harness your Purchasing Power (slow fashion, 2nd hand clothing, upcycling, organic garments, fair trade purchases, Ethical Brand Support, swapping ... etc)
3. HOW will you SHOW YOUR CHILDREN that 'Hands and hearts' make our 'chosen skin' (quotes from the film) REAL PEOPLE make what we chose to wear. How will we treat them with what we buy?
If ethical practices become the norm, and financial health is not only measured in profit margins but in social wellness, surely that is good for all of us.
