I'll be starting a new segment called "What each team should do this off season". Ninth up is the Nuggets! The Denver Nuggets are a young team, and while inconsistent, can do a few moves to be more consistent and get closer to their goal of the playoffs.
1. Re Sign Danilo Gallinari, Mason Plumlee
Although oft injured, Danilo Gallinari is a really good player. Gallinari scores with ease because of his length on shorter players, can stroke it from 3, grabs rebounds, and is a good defender. Gallinari, 28, has never averaged less than 12 points other than his rookie season with the Knicks where he only got 14 MPG. Gallinari should be brought back to Denver for the long-term and should demand a 4YR-50M on the open market. As for Mason Plumlee, he was brought to Denver during the trade deadline for Jusuf Nurkic. Nurkic thrived in his new home, and while Plumlee wasn’t as good, Plumlee provided the same effort, hustle, and energy that he did with Portland off the bench for Denver, which was something they desperately needed. Plumlee is a great backup center for rising star Nikola Jokic and similar to Gallinari, should be resigned for the long run. Plumlee, 27, should get a 3YR-27M as a restricted free agent. If other teams are seriously interested, the Nuggets should bid higher to avoid losing Plumlee.
2. Let Roy Hibbert walk in free agency
Roy Hibbert doesn’t fit with this young Denver team and they have no need of him with their bigs situation. Hibbert is much better suited for a contending team, so he can get a chance at a ring and then retire. Hibbert is only 30 years old, though, but has declined tremendously the last few seasons and hasn’t had a good season he left Indiana. The best free agent destinations for Hibbert would include Rockets, Thunder, or the Cavaliers. Hibbert wouldn’t get many minutes on any of those teams and shouldn’t touch the court much of the whole season, but can still provide a veteran presence in the locker room and on the court for the young players. If Gallinari and Plumlee are brought back and Hibbert is not brought back, let’s take a look at the Nuggets great young depth.
